What is Meditation?

Meditation is a method for deep relaxation which has been practised for thousands of years. This ancient art involves contemplation whilst focusing your mind. It is also the art of ‘not’ focusing the mind.

Some forms of meditation such as visualisation or guided meditation require you to focus your mind on a scene, thought, picture or an object. Whereas some other forms require you to be still and observe thoughts as they flow freely.

Either way, it is a practice that can help you to understand everything in your life more clearly.

Meditation for Beginners

During a visualisation or guided meditation as you relax your body and start to focus your mind. All the jumbled thoughts in your mind start to diminish as you focus on your subject. This is probably the best way for new beginners.

When you are just starting out meditating you will be amazed at how busy your mind really is. Don’t be surprised if you have thoughts popping into your mind of what has happened in your day. They may be things you may have to do or have forgotten to do. Just know that this is a natural process and through practice and time your mind will quieten.

It can take time to get used to meditation but with perseverance and patience it will be become easier. As you get accustomed to it you will soon start to feel the benefits.

With our every day pace of life increasing and being bombarded with so much information it is no wonder the number of people suffering from stress, anxiety, insomnia and chronic conditions are rising.

Many studies show, a regular meditation practice offers numerous health benefits, including lowering blood pressure, strengthening the immune system, and releasing stress and fatigue. Meditation can  help with pain management. It can also help to reduce negative emotions such as anger and resentment. It is relaxing and calming, reduces anxiety and promotes a sense of peace and purpose.

In fact, meditating for half an hour can provide more psychological rest than a full night’s sleep. As you meditate on a regular basis, you will notice an increased sense of well being as well as greater energy and creativity.
